Park Under 17s Crowned Northumberland 7s Champions

Fresh from their victory over Argentinian side St Albans College, Park made the short trip to Northern for the finals of the U17 Northumberland 7s where, for the first time at this age group, Park won the cup and in the process did not concede a single point.

Percy Park 26 –Ponteland 0

Park started on the defensive; however their vigorous defence and discipline at the breakdown enabled them to hold their nerve and eventually force a mistake. Using their hard runners close in Park made ground close to the breakdown before releasing their speedsters out wide; Kyle, Reese and Josh in particular causing the opposition problems.

Towards the end of the half the Ponteland defence was eventually breached by Kyle, giving Park a half time lead of 7-0.

Now in their groove Park were quickly on top in the 2nd half. Jamie Wrigs, making a welcome return after a year out, showing his class in defence as well as attack to score from deep.

Next on the scoreboard was Josh who left the defence in his wake for a memorable try. Wrigs added the final score and a degree of amusement when his drop goal conversion attempt went closer to the uprights on the opposite pitch than his intended target.

Percy Park 36 – Morpeth 0

Park had the disadvantage of  having to play their 2nd game against a fresh Morpeth side, this combined with several injuries sustained in the 1st game resulted in a rather hesitant and nervous start; however the knowledge that a win would secure the cup spurred them on to a comprehensive victory.

Whilst the backs had ruled the roost against Ponteland it was the forwards who dominated the game this time around, Ciaran Wrightson in particular proving to be a master of the breakdown.

Two tries up at half time Park cut loose in the 2nd half – their pre- season fitness work giving them a distinct advantage and 4 further tries followed in the 2nd period.
