Percy Park v Pocklington 14/09/09

E-mail Print PDF

The under 16s first game of the season was a long trip to Pocklington, but it’s always worth the journey as the opposition always put on a good game.

Pocklington kicked off, and initially put Park under pressure as we failed to gather the ball.(this was a feature from the re starts) but the well drilled defence held and Pocklington were pushed back. The game hovered around and just inside our half for the first few minutes of the game. The pack was as powerful as ever and dominated the scrums and Park began to build a head of steam. From a scrum the ball was played out from Cameron Taylor to Howard Stock. He then played in Matty Robson who made good ground before off loading to new boy Bob Watts. He powered forward and had multiple support runs from players to the left and right of him. Bob side stepped their covering defender and went over to score the first try of the game, first of the season and his first for the club. Unfortunately the conversion was missed so the score stayed at 5-0 to Park. Soon Cameron Taylor made it 10-0 with a good diagonal run from the back of the scrum and Jack Dent added the extras to make it 12-0. The third try came from a line out the ball was cleanly won and recycled to Ben Roberson who played in Matty Atkinson who powered over to make it 17-0 and again Jack Dent added the conversion to make it 19-0.

In the second half there were a number of changes both in personnel and positions and Park although a little disjoined still played some good rugby. From an early move the ball was played along the backs and a space opened up for Bob Watts to add his second try (MC) to make it 24-0. The next and final try came when Alex Littlefield created some space for Matty Atkinson to go over (MC) to make the final score 29-0.

For the first game of the season this was an excellent performance by the whole team and the good thing is they will get even better. Pocklington played well be were never let within striking distance as the defence played superb. What was really telling was the fitness of the players, they have worked really hard over the summer and it showed. Thanks in part for the excellent fitness must go to Derek “Sergeant MajorDavidson who ran them into the ground, but the lads all appreciated his hard work.
