Park Colts 59 - 7 Seghill

E-mail Print PDF

Sunday September 28th was the first time in my rugby career of some 40 years, that I have witnessed 2 people from the same side being red carded in the first 20 minutes! Luckily for us, they were from the oppositions side! On one of the warmest days of the year, we travelled to Seghill to play their Colts side. With a strong side to pick from, and welcoming Ben Smallwood into

the side for his first League game, whilst letting first team squad member Joe Wafer take a place on the bench. Park started with the sun to their backs against a spirited Seghill side. Park had plenty of early ball and ran well but it took 10 minutes before we eventually crossed their line with Phil Thompson finishing off a fine move. This was followed by Rob Neasham crashing over. Meanwhile, after a handbags at 10 paces, Seghill had a penalty and yellow card awarded against them, however, the offender continued to argue with the ref who red carded him. Ben Smith dissected the backs line and whilst slowing down to score was tripped from behind which caused the issuing of the second red card. We then lost first Stobbsy then Neash, both with bangs to their respective knees.

Just to show that there was no hard feelings, Ben Smith again broke through at pace and scored. The first half was rounded off by 'Big Mark' showing his power and taking a few over the line with him. Robert Mutch converted 4 from the 5 tries to give us a half time lead of 33 - 0.

Several substitutions were made at the start of the second half. Captain Dale who returned for his first game this season following minor surgery showed that he has lost none ofhis number 10 skills, was rested at half time with Mark Watson coming into 9 and Rob Mutch dropping out to 10. Ben M went into 2nd row with Karl rested, Coatsy swopped with Connor, Joe in for Neash and Sven went on earlier for Stobbsy.

The second half did not flow as well as the first half but evetually we regained control with tries coming from Rob M (2), Coatsy,Joe, Mark Watson and another for Mark Hall. Rob M kicked 4. Seghill never rolled over and tried their hardest right to the end to their credit. They were rewarded with a consoltaion try near to the end when quick thinkng from their flyhalf kicked the ball into our 22 with a race between Adam and the lad who to fair, was the fastest player on the pitch.Adam narrowly lost and the goal was added. My tally made the score 10 tries and 8 conversions or 66 points but the ref had his score at 59...who cares!

Mentions in dispatches for Ben Smallwood who had a fine opener. Sven showed pace when he had the chance to run, Adam cam close on several occasions and even Jon showed strength and pace with the sort of runs that props all over the worls make!

At last we are starting to look like the team we know we can be. No match next week so we would invite anyone who is not at school rugby on saturday to let Barry or myself know, and to train with the Senior squad on either monday or wednesday nights and to play for one of the Senior teams on saturday. We will ALL train please on wednesday and sunday in perparation for our next league game 2 weeks today against North Shields.
